The adventure begins....

The adventure begins....
Welcome to my blog. It's the story, as it happens, of my year in France. I'm a Rotary exchange student and, as of the 21st of January 2008, am living in the town of Selestat, Alsace for one year. At the moment I live in the little village of Ebersheim near Selestat. I go to school, will live with five different families and have only just begun to explore Europe. So let's start with the day of my arrival. After 45 hours of travelling I was met by my first host mum Elizabeth and some Rotary members to a lovely sign that read, "Bienvenue a France". Pure adrenalin allowed me to stay awake for a tour of nearby Mulhouse and even to strike a highly energetic pose. Believe me, the photo is decieving...I was absolutely buggered lol.

Jan 26th Australia Day

Jan 26th Australia Day
It's Australia day and as a proud Aussie I decided to force my national day on my host family. I recieved a wonderful recipe for a pavlova in a pack made up by Rotary for all of the Tassie exchangies so I decided today would be as good as any to make the heavenly dessert. I followed the recipe exactly but the temperature was in fahrenheit and not in celcius so after just a few minutes at 300 degrees celcius the blackend beast bellowed smoke. A thick lashing of whipped cream later and i thought that no one would ever notice but.... it was terrible. My host parents, Fabien and Elizabeth, battled it with forced smiles on their faces. The next day the leftovers had been discarded, I guess so nobody was offered more.

Alsace!!!

Alsace!!!
So I live in Alsace. It's a long valley edged on each side by two mountain ranges. On the east is Foret Noire the Black Forest which is part of Germany and to the west is the Vosges Mountains. It is such a beautiful place. Nearly every peak in the Vosges has castle or a ruin which was once a castle perched precariously on top and on the weekends I sometimes go with my host family to see them. The biggest castle by far is the Château du Haut-K½nigsbourg and is a wonderful red colour which can be seen from the surrounding valley. My school has a great view of it when the weather is fine. TRIVIA: the black forest cake, originated from here (remember the tirvia sections, I'll test u later)

On a rare day with a clear sky....

On a rare day with a clear sky....
My host parents are the sporty type. They love nothing more than to hike to the top of a mountain as entertainment for a day. The views are spectacular from the Vosges mountains huh? Sometimes the walk is worth it.
